Cachar Shocker: Three Workers and a local Die in Water Tank Suffocation Incident

Four people, including a local resident and three workers, died after allegedly suffocating inside an underground water tank at a construction site in Kumarpara under Joynagar in Assam’s Cachar district on Friday (July 31).

According to preliminary information, one worker first entered the water tank to clean it. After a short while, he reportedly lost consciousness inside the tank. Seeing this, two other workers entered the tank in an attempt to rescue him, but they also became unconscious.

A local resident then entered the tank to rescue the three men. However, he too reportedly lost consciousness inside the enclosed space.

The incident caused panic in the locality as hundreds of residents gathered at the site. Other local people later entered the tank and managed to bring all four unconscious men out. They were immediately rushed to Silchar Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared all four dead.

The deceased have been identified as Niloy Paul, Nandan Paul, Debashish Paul and Champu Paul. According to local sources, Niloy Paul was a resident who entered the tank during the rescue attempt, while the other three were workers. All four were residents of Kumarpara.

Following the incident, police reached the spot and detained Gautam Paul, the owner of the under-construction building where the incident took place. An investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of the deaths.

The exact cause of the incident has not yet been officially confirmed. Police are expected to investigate whether toxic gases had accumulated inside the enclosed water tank and whether adequate safety measures were in place before anyone entered it.
