‘Pay Rs 5 Lakh, Get a Job’: Hailakandi BJP Leader Arrested Over Alleged Fraud

BJP leader Amit Kumar Roy has been arrested by Hailakandi Police following allegations that he collected money from several people by promising jobs and contractual work.

According to the allegations, Roy collected lakhs of rupees from people in Hailakandi district on the promise of helping them secure jobs and contractor-related work. He is also accused of taking goods from several local business establishments on the pretext of providing contracts and allegedly threatening shop owners when they demanded payment.

Police reportedly arrested Roy after several people lodged complaints at Hailakandi Sadar Police Station. He was subsequently produced before a court and sent to judicial custody.

One of the alleged victims claimed that he paid Roy Rs 5 lakh after being promised a contractor-related job.

“Amit Kumar Roy took Rs 5 lakh from me on the pretext of giving me a job. He told me he would give me a contractor job and assured me that it would be done within a month. More than a month has passed. When I asked him to return my money, he kept giving me dates but never returned it,” the victim alleged.

The victim said he had met Roy during an election period and that both were BJP workers. According to him, they developed a good relationship, following which Roy offered to help him get the job.

The complainant also alleged that Roy took him to meet MP Kripanath Mallah. He said this gave him the impression that Roy had access to senior political leaders, which increased his trust in him.

According to the victim, Rs 2.5 lakh was paid through online transactions while another Rs 2.5 lakh was allegedly paid in cash. He claimed that Roy told him the money was required because several people, including MLAs and MPs, would need to be given their share.

The victim further alleged that when he began demanding either the promised job or the return of his money, Roy allegedly threatened him.

The allegations are part of the complaints on the basis of which Hailakandi Police initiated action against Roy. The allegations have not been established by a court, and the investigation is understood to be ongoing.
