Cachar Fertiliser Syndicate Under Scanner: Assam Farmers’ Urea Allegedly Routed to Myanmar via Mizoram

Fresh allegations of illegal diversion of urea fertiliser meant for farmers in Assam have surfaced in Cachar, with claims that consignments are being transported through Mizoram and eventually smuggled into Myanmar.

According to the allegations, a large fertiliser syndicate has been operating in Cachar, allegedly transporting truckloads of urea allocated for farmers in Assam through the district to Mizoram and subsequently to Myanmar.

The allegations have also raised questions over the role of sections of the Cachar Police. It has been alleged that some police personnel may have been directly assisting the syndicate, allowing the illegal transportation of fertiliser to continue without obstruction.

Cachar Police have, on several occasions, reportedly seized trucks carrying urea while they were allegedly being transported towards Mizoram. However, despite such seizures, the alleged illegal trade is claimed to have continued.

This has raised questions about how the alleged syndicate is able to become active again after police operations and why the seizures have seemingly failed to stop the alleged illegal movement of fertiliser.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has repeatedly taken a strict position against the illegal transportation of fertiliser allocated for Assam’s farmers to other states or foreign countries. He has also warned that strict action would be taken against those involved in such activities.

However, the fresh allegations from Cachar have raised concerns over whether such directions are being effectively enforced on the ground.

There are further serious allegations that sections of the police receive payments for each fertiliser truck allegedly allowed to pass through the route. These claims have not been independently established and require a proper investigation.

The allegations have therefore raised several questions: who is allegedly operating the fertiliser syndicate, how is urea allocated for Assam’s farmers allegedly reaching Myanmar through Mizoram, and why does the alleged operation continue despite police seizures?

An impartial investigation into the alleged fertiliser diversion and the claims of police involvement would be necessary to establish the facts. If wrongdoing is established, appropriate action should be taken against those responsible.

The issue is particularly significant as the fertiliser in question is intended for Assam’s farmers, making any alleged diversion a matter of concern for both agricultural supply and public accountability.
