Pregnant Woman Killed in Hit-and-Run on Silchar-Imphal Highway

A woman in her 30s was killed in a hit-and-run accident on National Highway 37 in Cachar district on Wednesday (7 October) afternoon after an oil tanker allegedly hit her scooter from behind.

The incident took place around noon in the Jujang Pahar area along the Silchar-Imphal highway. According to local information, the woman was pregnant and was travelling on her scooter when the tanker struck her.

The impact caused her to fall from the scooter and she died at the spot. The tanker, bearing registration number MN 01 AA 4180, allegedly fled the scene following the collision.

Following the incident, local residents blocked the Silchar-Imphal highway and demanded that the tanker and its driver be arrested. The protesters also initially prevented the police from taking the body for post-mortem examination.

Police later reached the spot. According to reports, personnel from Banskandi Police Station caught the tanker and its driver.

After the driver was caught, the protesters handed over the body to the police. The body was subsequently sent to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem examination.

The deceased was identified as Mary Lalrimpui Mar, a resident of Lower Labanakhal. Further details about the circumstances of the collision are awaited.
