Building Responsible Citizens: Cachar College Organises Road Safety and Environmental Awareness

Cachar College, Silchar, organised two awareness programmes on road safety and sustainable waste management on 6 November 2026, with the aim of promoting responsible behaviour and awareness among students.

The programmes were conducted under the guidance of the college Principal, Dr Apratim Nag, and Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) Coordinator, Dr Nitu Debnath.

During the road safety awareness programme, Dr Nitu Debnath, who served as the resource person, highlighted the importance of following traffic rules, road signs and signals, maintaining speed limits and adopting safe driving practices. He stressed the need to wear helmets while riding two-wheelers and use seat belts while travelling in cars. The importance of using footpaths and zebra crossings was also discussed.

He further raised concerns over road accidents and their consequences for individuals, families and society. Students were cautioned against reckless driving, overspeeding, dangerous overtaking and using mobile phones while driving. The importance of avoiding driving under the influence of alcohol and maintaining patience on roads was also emphasised.

The second programme focused on environmental awareness and sustainable waste management. Dr Debnath highlighted the importance of segregating waste at source, distinguishing between biodegradable and non-biodegradable materials and ensuring proper waste disposal. He also discussed the harmful effects of improper waste management on public health, the environment and ecological balance.

Students were encouraged to reduce waste generation, avoid unnecessary use of single-use plastics and adopt sustainable practices in their daily lives. He emphasised that environmental protection requires collective participation and responsibility from every individual.

Both programmes witnessed the participation and cooperation of students, faculty members and administrative staff. Dr Debnath also expressed his gratitude to the Principal, faculty members, administrative staff and participants for their support in making the programmes successful.

The initiatives reaffirmed Cachar College’s commitment to promoting road safety, environmental awareness, responsible citizenship and sustainable practices among students and the wider community.
