AAMSU blocks Central Road in Silchar; demands action against miscreants who allegedly attacked Mehraj

All Assam Minority Students’ Union’s (AAMSU) Cachar unit had blocked the Central Road in Silchar. The members of AAMSU alleged that the administration has practically taken zero actions against the miscreants who allegedly attacked Cachar College Student Mehrah Ahmed Barbhuiya for not chanting ‘Jai Shree Ram’.

The members of AAMSU were demonstrating in front of Nahata Textiles in Central Road and the road was blocked for around 45 minutes. One of the spokespeople of AAMSU said that the minorities are tortured time and again and the administration remains silent. “The constitution of India guarantees us the right to equality. We too deserve justice. More than 48 hours have passed and the miscreants who attacked Mehraj are roaming around freely,” stated the spokesperson.

According to the FIR lodged by Mehraj Ahmed Barbhuiya he was beaten by a mob in front of GC College while he was talking to his friends. He stated that he was asked to chant Jai Shree Ram and when he didn’t, the mob attacked him with sticks and then vandalised his scooter.

However, students of GC College stated otherwise. In fact, an FIR was lodged against him too. A female student of GC College has filed a counter-complaint. In an FIR the GC College student alleged that Mehraj Ahmed Barbhuiya along with two other individuals were eve-teasing her and her friend in front of GC College.

She wrote in her complaint, “I am harassed by a guy name Mehraj Ahmed Barbhuiya a resident of Madhurbond Silchar. He always taunts me and eve-teases me in front of Guru Charan College Silchar. The day before (yesterday) he stopped me with two of his friend and asked me my name and because of not answering his question he caught my hand and used slangs on me and my friend. He also told me that he will make me Muslim.”

Police had summoned Tapash Nath after his name was mentioned by Mehraj. As per available information, Tapash Nath was allowed to go back to his home after interrogation. The Police said it is investigating the matter.
