Moment of history for Barak Valley. Barak Valley finds the first batter born and brought up in Silchar to score a century in Ranji Trophy. In the ongoing match against Bihar, Silchar boy, Itkhola AC’s Abhishek Thakuri has scored a century to put Assam in a formidable position. Playing without the star batter IPL sensation, Riyan Parag, Assam is in the back foot in this season of Ranji trophy.
Parvez Musharraf who plays his cricket from Silchar and scored a debut century in the previous match against UP in the rain-soaked match started from where he ended. Emerging Mr. Consistent of Assam Cricket, India Club Silchar’s Parvez Musaraf scored a brilliant half-century opening the batting and got out caught and bowled to Amod Yadav at 89.
Then came the moment that Silchar Cricket has been waiting for. Abhishek Thakuri, playing his second match of the season scored his maiden century to become the first Silchar boy to achieve the feat. Breaking another wicket-keeper batter Rajdeep Das’ record of 49, Thakuri scored a brilliant 115 to secure the inspirational moment for the people of Barak Valley and especially the young aspiring cricketers.
“Abhishek Thakuri is the most talented wicketkeeper-batter in Assam today. Thakuri scoring a century against Bihar in Ranji trophy is definitely a moment of pride but not a matter of surprise. In fact, what’s surprising for me is that he has not yet managed to score one. I am not saying this because he is from Silchar and local sentiments. I have umpired in APCC, seen him grow as a player and that is why, I feel he is a batter who can consistently score at the top level. Now that he has scored a century, I hope he remains consistent,” said Bijendra Prasad Singh, former Secretary of Silchar DSA.

This century by Thakuri, consistent performance from Parvez with the bat and Rahul Singh with the ball is a redefining moment for the history of Cricket in Barak Valley. “Pritam Das played at the State level for 10 years and remained the torch bearer of Silchar cricket. Now it is time for the next generation to own up the responsibility and take the race ahead. Also, Silchar DSA needs to create a roadmap to develop cricketers which can only happen if top level coaching is delivered to the youngsters. The ownership is now on the Silchar Cricket Academy…” concluded Bijendra Prasad Singh.
What is worth mentioning here is that, Rahul Singh, who has already taken a five-wicket haul in this Ranji Trophy edition played a brilliant knock with the bat batting at number 11. He has scored 29 runs and stitched a partnership of 93 runs before getting run out. All eyes will be on him tomorrow as Assam would attempt to enforce follow on and aim for the bonus point.
