After Heavy Rains and Flood Fears, DC Cachar Inspects Silchar’s Embankments
Following continuous rainfall and growing concerns of flooding among the people of Silchar, District Commissioner Cachar, Mridul Yadav, has finally taken action by visiting several embankment sites to review the ongoing infrastructure work. The move comes as residents express worry about the town’s flood preparedness, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas.
According to a press release from the Regional Office of Information & Public Relations, Barak Valley Zone, Silchar, the District Commissioner conducted detailed inspections of critical embankments and flood protection structures in areas such as Bethukandi, Berenga Nathpara, and other nearby locations that have a history of erosion and waterlogging. He was accompanied by K. Zaman, Executive Engineer, Water Resources Department, along with senior officials.
The press note stated that Mridul Yadav closely examined the state of the embankments and reviewed the effectiveness of the erosion control systems already in place. He requested technical reports and directed officials to make sure the flood protection measures are scientifically sound, finished on time, and strong enough to handle the pressure of rising water during the monsoon. His focus was on long-term solutions instead of short-term patchwork.
Apart from flood defences, the District Commissioner also checked road infrastructure under the Public Works (Roads) Department. He visited ongoing construction and repair sites and assessed the quality of work, stressing the importance of reliable roads during emergencies. He urged all departments to stay alert and work together as the monsoon advances.
In 2022, Silchar experienced one of its worst floods in recent memory, which included a breach in the Bethukandi embankment. Since then, residents have repeatedly asked for proper repair and strengthening of all embankments that could cause such disasters again. However, even after three years, much of the work remains incomplete.
A full year has passed with dry weather and no major rainfall—an ideal time to carry out such essential work. Yet, questions remain: why was the embankment work not completed on time? Why did the District Commissioner decide to inspect only now, when the rains have already started? The people of Silchar have a right to expect timely and responsible action from their administration.
