The illegal trade of Burmese betel nuts does not seem to stop at all. Illegal traders are constantly trying to smuggle Burmese betel nuts by adopting new strategies. Various illegal materials including Burmese betel nuts brought for smuggling using new inventive techniques are being caught by Lailapur and Dholai police. An oil tanker loaded with Burmese betel nuts was intercepted by Lailapur police on Thursday night.
When the truck bearing duplicate number tried to cross the checking point infront of the Lailapur police patrol post, the on-duty police personnel searched the truck and found it to be fully loaded with Burmese betel nuts. Immediately, the police arrested the driver Sebul Uddin aged 24 years, son of Jalal Uddin, a resident of Bashkandi in Lakhipur Police Station area of Cachar district.
On Friday, the truck was brought to Dholai police station and more than 2000 kgs of Burmese betel nuts were recovered from three separate chambers by cutting them with the help of electric cutters. There is no number plate on back of the truck. The front mounted number plate bears the vehicle number AS28 AC 0225.
Inspector Manoj Baruah, Officer-in-Charge of Dholai Police Station told that the number attached to the truck is not the number of this truck. The illegal betel nut smugglers were trying to smuggle betel nuts by using the number of another good carrier vehicle. The Police have registered a case and started investigation in this regard.
