APCC president Bhupen Bora warns “strict action” against those who burnt Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha’s effigy
Three time MLA and current working president of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha’s effigy was burnt inside the complex of Congress Bhawan in Silchar by a few angry members of the party. The incident took place earlier today exposing the horrible state of affairs in Cachar District Congress.
APCC president Bhupen Bora termed the chain of events “unfortunate”. Speaking exclusively with Barak Bulletin, Bora said that he has asked APCC general secretary, Apurba Bhattacharjee to submit a report tomorrow. “What I got to see on television is unfortunate,” said Bora.
It is worth mentioning here that the scuffle broke during the Town Committee meeting that was chaired by Apurba Bhattacharjee in presence of former minister Ajit Singh, veteran congressman Babul Hore and others. If sources are to be believed then, Tamal Banik was about to be declared as the president of Cachar District Congress and Pallav Singh was to be announced as the president of Youth Congress. This leadership is what a section was protesting against. According to them, both the selected leaders work for the benefit of BJP while having key positions in Congress. The rebels in Congress are of the view that Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha recommended these leaders and that is why, they burnt the effigy of the Congress MLA inside Congress Bhawan in Silchar.
“Inside Congress Bhawan or anywhere else, no Congress member should be burning the effigy of a fellow member, let alone MLA or Working President of APCC. This is not in accordance to the values of Indian National Congress. Strict action will be taken against those found guilty of burning the effigy of Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha,” asserted APCC president Bhupen Bora.
Few young Congress workers had gathered at the Congress Bhawan in the evening and honoured Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha’s effigy by pouring milk on it. According to them, it was to counter the afternoon of burning the effigy. They said, “Dalals of BJP committed the abysmal act inside the sacred Congress Bhawan. So we welcomed our leader with milk. They are irked as Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha is bringing order in Cachar Congress. We respect our leader and have complete faith in him.”
When asked if the scuffle was provoked by people with vested interests, APCC president refused to comment at this stage. “Let me first go through the report of APCC General Secretary, Apurba Bhattacharjee and only then I will be in a position to comment on this,” said Bhupen Bora.
