Artwork and exhibition at Latu Adarsh Higher Secondary School leaves many mesmerised

Latu Adarsh Higher Secondary School celebrated Maharajat Jayanti by holding an exhibition. Latu is a remote village near the Indo-Bangladesh border. The students of government-run school commemorated the bravehearts of the sepoy rebellion through their art. Martyr Mati Latu frequently featured in those artworks as Latu was his native village.

Latu happens to be a hotbed of culture and history. The first newspaper in Sylhet, “Shrihat Prakash” was founded by Sushantan Paricharan Das who was also a native of Latu. The art exhibition also commemorated that.

The students brought the folk art form of Latu to the forefront by using various traditional techniques in their artwork. Regional dances like Dhamail, Bihu and Ojha were also visible in the artworks. Some students have raised awareness about anti-drugs campaigns in India while some have tried to create innovative ways to manage waste. The art of hand knitting was also highlighted in the exhibition by various students.

The artwork of Piklu Chandra received widespread attention from various dignitaries including that of Dr Ranoj Pegu, Minister of Education. Piklu Chandra received life-threatening injuries after trying to save his mother from an accident.

The incident paralysed his body but his mind persevered on. He soon developed a keen interest in art which he pursued relentlessly. His detailed wooden handicrafts earned widespread praise in the exhibition. Alaknanda Bhattacharjee and Tushar Kanti Bhattacharjee, who are teachers of the school and Sumit Das, who is an assistant teacher in the state education department were in charge of the exhibition.
