Ashish Haldar Rejoins BJP after an unsuccessful Independent Run
The recent return of Former MLA Dilip Paul caused quite a stir in the region, and now Ashish Haldar of Sonai has also re-joined his former party BJP after a hiatus of 3 years. Haldar’s return to BJP follows his failure to secure a ticket from the party to contest in the Sonai Assembly Election. Disheartened by the party’s decision, he chose to run independently, which ultimately proved unsuccessful for him. Now, after approximately 3 years, he has decided to come back to his former political home, the Bharatiya Janata Party.
In 2021, Ashish Haldar was confident that he would receive the party ticket to contest in Sonai for BJP. However, to his dismay, the party denied him the ticket and instead chose Aminul Hoque Laskar. Feeling betrayed, Haldar, who considered himself a diligent party worker, expressed his disappointment and resigned from the party.
Following his resignation, he announced his candidacy as an Independent. However, during the election, he only managed to secure approximately 10% of the total vote share, garnering around 14,500 votes. In contrast, Aminul Hoque Laskar received 52,283 votes, which accounted for 35% of the total vote share.
Despite their efforts, neither Haldar nor Laskar clinched the Sonai seat. The victory went to Karim Uddin Barbhuiya from AIUDF, who secured a total of 71,937 votes, leading by a margin of 19,654 votes and capturing 49% of the vote share.
Now, after a 3-year hiatus, Ashish Haldar has decided to return to BJP, sparking headlines ahead of the upcoming MP Elections. While the exact reason for his return remains uncertain, it is speculated that it could be for his own political survival. Haldar’s unsuccessful independent stint may have prompted him to seek the support of a major political party like BJP, which could potentially bolster his political career. However, only time will tell the extent of his influence within the party and its impact on his future endeavors.
