Since 2021, the Assam Publication Board and All Assam Publishers & Book Sellers Association have been organising the Assam Book Fair throughout the state. This time the fair is being held in Silchar from December 1 to 10 as per CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s desire.
On the first day of the event, Pramod Kalita, the Secretary of Assam Publication Board while addressing the media stated that till now the “Assam Book Fair” has been conducted in Dhemaji, Jorhat, Diphu, Bongaigaon and Nalbari. CM Himanta Biswa Sarma had emphasised the importance of conducting the fair in Silchar as well as in Haflong too. Following his wish, the fair is being organised in Silchar this year, from today onwards, and it will continue for the next 10 days.
The book fair is not just giving the bibliophiles of the region an opportunity to read and buy books of various genres but also the opportunity to witness new events everyday. For readers who would be visiting the fair and, of course, buying the books, he has revealed one interesting lottery. Readers buying books worth more than 1000 rupees in total will get a coupon, and a lucky draw will be organised to see which coupon holder is the winner of the 1 lakh rupees monetary award.
Not just this, various talented and well-known writers from across Assam will be gracing the event giving Silcharians the opportunity to experience the magic of stories. These talented writers from Assam will share their amazing tales, enabling the bookworms in Silchar a special chance to enjoy and appreciate the beauty of books.
As per the Secretary, there will be a “Kabi Sammelon” which will be attended by various poets from different linguistic backgrounds including Bengali, Assamese, Hindi, Bodo and various other languages.
Former journalist and the Chancellor of Nagaland University, Samudragupta Kashyap, would also grace the event with his presence. Elaborating the importance of the Chancellor’s visit, the Secretary of the Assam Publication Board stated that journalism can work as a bridge to unify both the Barak and Brahmaputra Valley, expressing his wish to eradicate the differences between the two.
Various publication associations of Assam and other parts of India, along with Bangladesh, have also set up their stalls in the Book Fair. For a society to grow, its important for the people to expand their minds, foster knowledge and think critically. All these qualities can be achieved through books, and book fairs can work as the stepping stones to the journey of reading.
