Assam Gets Yellow Alert for Possible Thunderstorm; Rain Forecast for Barak Valley All Week

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on 3 May 2025 shared a Multi-Hazard Warning Map on X (formerly Twitter), placing Assam under an Orange Alert for the day, warning of possible thunderstorm and lightning. For the following three days—4 to 6 May—the state has been marked under a Yellow Alert, indicating the possibility of moderate weather disturbances.

According to the IMD’s colour-coded system: Green means “No Warning”, Yellow urges people to “Be Alert”, Orange calls for citizens to “Be Prepared”, and Red signals “Take Action”. Fortunately, none of the states, including Assam, have been marked under a Red Alert.

In Assam’s Barak Valley region, the IMD website shows that Silchar and Hailakandi are likely to experience a generally cloudy sky with one or two spells of rain or thundershowers until 7 May. For 8 and 9 May, the forecast changes to Rain or Thundershowers, indicating continued unsettled weather conditions in the area.

Model predictions for Sribhumi, also available on the IMD portal, show expected rainfall of 6 mm on 6 May, 19 mm on 7 May, and 16 mm on 8 May. This suggests that the area is likely to see significant showers mid-week.

Even though the warning level in Assam moves from Orange today to Yellow in the next three days, it is advisable for residents to stay informed and plan their activities accordingly. Staying alert and prepared can help prevent weather-related disruptions and ensure safety during this unstable weather spell.
