Assam Police seizes 2000kg of Burmese Supari smuggled from Mizoram in Hailakandi
In another campaign against the smuggling of illicit materials, the Hailakandi police have managed to seize Burmese betel nuts on its way to Lala in Hailakandi.
The incident happened last night at around midnight when Hailakandi police, based on secret intel, intercepted a vehicle carrying Burmese betel nuts of around 2,000 kg and seized the consignment.
The driver couldn’t be apprehended as he succeeded in fleeing the scene when police tried to nab him.
According to sources in the Police, the Burmese betel nuts arrive from Mizoram through the Dholchhera area, where often the illicit consignments are kept for reloading. “Ever since our SP Gaurav Upadhyay took charge here, he had set pretty strict rules regarding smuggling through the border areas. Due to strict checking and patrolling, especially at the Bilaipur outpost, the smugglers these days take alternative routes bypassing the main road through the forest area and the adjacent river to smuggle,” said the investigating officer.
“Last night, based on a secret source, we intercepted a vehicle carrying Burmese betels nuts packed inside 30 sacks. The driver somehow managed to flee the scene on foot, but fortunately, we were able to seize the consignment and the vehicle as well,” added the officer.
He informed that among those 30 sacks of Burmese betel nuts, 16 were bigger ones weighing 80 kg whereas the rest 14 smaller sacks weigh around 50 kg.
The registration number of the vehicle is AS-24C-9359 and the investigation of this case is still going. In the past few weeks, smuggling of illicit materials like the Burmese betel nuts from the neighbouring Mizoram state into Assam has come into the limelight, as Assam police have been successful in intercepting and busting some of those consignments in the nick of time.
