
Assam Pradesh Congress constitutes committee to visit Ichabeel Eviction Zone in Karimganj; Kamalakhya to convene
In two days, the Karimganj administration has bulldozed 161 structures including pucca residential buildings, kuccha houses, shops, among other structures. The administration said it is being done as per the government directives to make tea garden land free from encroachment.
It started on July 16 and continued till July 17, 2022. The Circle Officer of Patharkandi, Arpita Dutta Mazumdar, who led the eviction drive said this is the end of phase one and there are three phases in the eviction drive. When will the remaining drives conducted is something she said she isn’t aware.
While the victims continued to cry foul play, not a single opposition parties in Assam were resisting the eviction drive. North Karimganj MLA, Congress’ Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha met bureaucrats in Guwahati and that is about it.
Today evening, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee announced that a committee has been constituted to visit the eviction zones.
“Hon’ble President Assam PC, Shri Bhupen Kunar Borah has constituted a committee headed by Dy Leader ACLP, Shri Rakibul Hussain as Chairman and with the following senior congress leaders as members,” stated the order.
“The committee will visit Ichabeel Tea garden evicted areas immediately to take stock of the situation and will meet the affected people. Committee will submit a report to the Hon’ble APCC President after that,” the order added.
Apart from Rakibul Hussain, Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha has been designated to Convene the meeting. Rana Goswami, Nurul Huda, Nandita Das, Ramanna Baruah, Mira Barthakuri Goswami, Abdul Kuddus Choudhury are the members in the committee.
If the delegation is allowed to visit the spot is something that remains to be seen.
