Assam University Student Found Dead in Suspected Suicide at a PG, Family Alleges Foul Play

An Assam University student’s dead body was found this afternoon at the Aashiana PG in Panchayat Road, Silchar, where he had been residing for the past six months. His hanging body was discovered by fellow boarders, prompting immediate concern and a call to the authorities. A BA-LLB second-semester, Zahid Abbas Tapadar has been staying in Silchar in different hostels and PGs since his higher-secondary classes.

Zahid, boarded the PG in Panchayat Road, Silchar along with his younger brother, and was pursuing his studies in Silchar. This afternoon, his hanging dead body was found inside a room of the Paying Guest building. Upon receiving the devastating news, Zahid’s uncle arrived in Silchar and made a startling allegation: he claimed that Zahid’s death was not a suicide, but a murder.

He accused the other residents of the PG of being involved in a conspiracy to kill his nephew. He firmly stated, “This is impossible. He can’t take such a step. I won’t accept the body until the Magistrate arrives here and launches an investigation. The police personnel are asking me to send the body for postmortem, why should I? He was murdered and this is a conspiracy, we won’t take responsibility unless the investigation finds the truth”.

The PG owner on this incident said, “We were all out as it was Jumma today and we had gone for the Namaz. His (Zahid) brother also went with us to the Masjid and when we returned we heard about this incident. Now we can’t say why he committed suicide. I had his guardian’s contact number and I dialled his home and then they reached the building”. Cachar Police who was on the spot, then sent the body of the deceased student to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem examination.
