Assam University Students Pay Tribute to Dr Manmohan Singh
The students of Assam University, Silchar, gathered on Friday to pay homage to the late former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, who passed away on December 26 at the age of 92. Dr Singh, who had been unwell for the past few months, was admitted to AIIMS New Delhi’s Medical Emergency on Thursday evening. Despite medical efforts, he was declared dead at 9:51 PM.
The condolence meeting, held at the main gate of the university, saw participation from students across departments, as well as faculty members and scholars. The event included a moment of silence, candle lighting, and heartfelt tributes to honour the economist-statesman.
Speaking on the occasion, Arunit Dhar, a student of the Law Department, said, “We mourn the loss of Dr Manmohan Singh Ji, whose legacy of visionary leadership and dedication to public service will forever inspire us. His contributions, from navigating India through the 1991 economic crisis to elevating the nation on the global stage, remain unparalleled.”
Sachin Kumar, representing the students’ union, highlighted Dr Singh’s transformative role in India’s development, saying, “As an economist, Finance Minister, and later as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, Dr Singh introduced reforms that reshaped India. His work with institutions like the UGC and the Planning Commission left a lasting impact on education and governance.”
The gathering concluded with prayers for the departed leader and reflections on his enduring contributions to the nation. Dr Singh’s demise marks the end of an era, but his legacy continues to inspire generations.
