
Assam’s War on Loan Sharks: Cachar Police Nabs 4, All Assam Score over Century
Under the leadership of CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam Police have initiated a crackdown on illegal moneylending practices. Recently, this drive was carried out in Cachar district, where Cachar Police apprehended four individuals.
The individuals under police custody were identified as Khairul Islam, Dilbahar, Heena Begam Laskar and Sahid Mazumdar. Sahid Mazumdar was arrested this evening and he is at present facing interrogation at Malugram Police Station. While the other three were caught last night and have already been produced in front of the honorable court.
Deputy Superintendent of Police, Subrata Sen, informed that an official complaint had also been lodged against them. He further stated that these individuals had taken various objects from people as collateral in exchange for money, which the people could reclaim upon repayment. He mentioned that the police were able to seize these collaterals and they are currently under their care.
Additionally, he informed that the police had received more information regarding such moneylenders, and the drive against them would continue. This initiative is being implemented throughout the state, including in Cachar. As of now, four individuals have been apprehended, and more may get caught soon.
Recently, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma took to social media to announce that as many as 122 people across the state had been caught engaging in illegal moneylending businesses. The police have also seized cash, loan agreements, gold jewellery, land mortgage documents, and bank records.
CM Himanta Biswa Sarma further added that the government is committed to persisting in this initiative to protect vulnerable poor and middle-class citizens from the clutches of these unscrupulous lenders.
