Barak flowing at 21.33 mtr rising at 7cm per hour; River water overflowing in Tarapur, Nagatilla
The historical high of 21.84 metres recorded at Annapurna Ghat in 1989 is being put under challenge by the current rise in water level of Barak Valley. As per the 10:00 AM update, the water level of river Barak at Annapurna Ghat in Silchar stood at 21.26 metre rising at 6cm per hour. At 12:00 noon, it went up to 12.33 rising at 7cm per hour. This is against the danger level of 19.83 metre.
Already 2 metres above the danger level, river Barak has put various embankments under immense pressure. K Zaman, executive engineer of Water Resources, Silchar has reported to the DDMA stating that Betukandi, Badripar, Berenga and Tupkhana embankments are witnessing water topping and the embankments are at risk.
The under-construction dyke system in Roypur embankment, Borkhola was already under stress. The executive officer informed that there has been no breach yet but the river water is overtopping the entire embankment and not just the dyke system that was under construction.
Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that river water is flowing into the town. In Uttar Krishnapur, Nagatilla water of the river has already started flooding into residential areas. Similarly, river water is flooding into the residential areas of Tarapur Shib Bari road, Mazumdar Bazar, and several other parts of the stretch between Annapurna Ghat and Shib bari road.
Due to the overtopping at Roypur, the Kalain – Silchar road is already inundated, partially disrupting the vehicular traffic. The Roypur, Borkhola overtopping has put the regions in West Silchar under immense risk.
On the other hand, in Udharbond, Madhura river has overflown inundating several villages. The river water has flooded into Airport road as well.
Overall, the situation in Silchar is grim and the people of the entire Barak Valley are under stress. The district administration has put in place several measures to help the people affected by flood and urged the residents to avoid outdoor movements.
