Barak Valley floods: Death toll rises to 10 in Cachar  

As many as 10 citizen of Cachar district lost their lives due to drowning in the flood that paralysed the entire Barak Valley. Flood is very common in Assam and the village areas; especially the ones located close to a river suffer from flood every year. The habitats of those areas relocate themselves whenever they anticipate a flood, by doing that they restrict loss of property and lives. This year, the flood hit the valley much before they could anticipate. There were localities where flood water flowed in and within minutes there were neck level water.

Lack of preparation in both administration as well as the ones living in the flood prone areas, resulted in a massive destruction. In Cachar itself, the death toll has rose to 10. The names of the deceased released by the authority are Rina Mura (40 years), Panna Malakar (26 years), Anjali Das (4 years), Kalyani Das (-), Gopal Ch. Nath (70 years), Suman Das (24 years), Bapon Rabidas (17 years), Raju Nunla (21 years), Jamal Hussain (40 years), Pratap Singh (38 years).

The family of the deceased’s have been sanctioned a compensation of Rs 4 lakh. While in some cases Rs 4 lakh is already transferred through Electronic Clearance Service (ECS), there are bodies, which are still missing, and in such cases the compensation process is yet to begin. Also, for 70-year-old Gopal Ch Nath, the Circle officer is yet to submit a proposal and the compensation process will only begin after the proposal is submitted.
