Barak Valley on Yellow Alert, Rain Likely to Continue for Another Week Predicts IMD
Silchar town has been reeling under artificial floods as continuous rain has clogged drains and filled roads with water, creating chaos for commuters. Several lanes have become waterlogged, trapping vehicles, including a recovery van. With more rain expected in the coming days, the Barak Valley must brace itself for possible worsening weather conditions.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), both Silchar and Hailakandi are likely to experience rain or thundershowers every day from 31 May to 6 June. While no specific IMD forecast could be found for Sribhumi, it is expected to follow a similar weather pattern given its proximity.
The Regional Meteorological Centre in Guwahati has issued district-wise weather warnings, putting Sribhumi and Hailakandi under a yellow alert from today to 4 June. This warning indicates the possibility of thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 kmph at isolated places.
Cachar district, is under an orange alert for today. The warning mentions thunderstorms with lightning, gusty winds (30–40 kmph), and heavy to very heavy rainfall expected at isolated places. From 1 June to 4 June, however, Cachar will remain under a yellow alert for similar weather conditions, though the intensity is expected to be slightly lower.
The ongoing rainfall has already affected daily life in Silchar, with many parts of the town submerged, disrupting transport and local activities. Several roads in Hailakandi town are also under water. For public safety, the local administration has closed parts of Station Road near Vishal Mega Mart. The District Administration of Cachar has issued a notice urging the public not to spread false or unverified information. As the water level of the Barak River continues to rise, residents are strongly advised to stay indoors and avoid low-lying areas.
Residents across Barak Valley are urged to stay alert, follow official weather updates, and take safety steps. The Sribhumi District Administration in a notice shared that, as per Assam’s Weather Department, heavy rain is likely in the next 2–3 days. People are advised to avoid travel or digging in hilly areas, as landslides may occur. Stay safe and protect life and property.
