Bike Entry, Big Claim: Kamalakhya Sees ‘Development Vote’ in Katigorah, Predicts Win with Record Votes

Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha, the Bharatiya Janata Party candidate from Katigorah, arrived at his polling station on a motorcycle on Thursday to cast his vote in the ongoing Assam State Assembly Election 2026 and expressed confidence of a strong mandate in his favour.

After casting his vote, Purkayastha said he had visited several polling centres and observed what he described as public trust and support for BJP governance. He stated that people in Katigorah want development and prefer having a representative from the ruling party. Based on this, he said the constituency may witness a record voter turnout this year and expressed belief that he would win by a large margin.

Katigorah, located in Cachar district, is witnessing polling along with other constituencies across the state on Thursday.

Purkayastha’s candidature marks a significant political shift. He was earlier known as a prominent Congress leader from North Karimganj in the erstwhile Karimganj district, now renamed Sribhumi district. In recent years, he resigned from the Congress and gradually moved closer to the BJP before formally joining the party ahead of the current election.

Polling is underway across Assam as voters turn out to elect their representatives in the 2026 state assembly elections, with authorities ensuring necessary arrangements for a smooth voting process. According to the Election Commission of India, the state recorded a voter turnout of 17.87 per cent as of 9 am. Among Barak Valley districts, Cachar district recorded 18.08 per cent turnout, Hailakandi district reported 16.60 per cent, while Sribhumi district recorded the highest at 18.38 per cent so far.
