BJP MLAs from Barak Valley submit prayer to declare Aug 13 a state holiday as respect to Bir Saheed Tikendrajit
Silchar MLA Dipayan Chakraborty, Patherkandi MLA Krishnendu Paul, Udharbond MLA Mihir Kanti Shome, Lakhipur MLA Kaushika Rai, MLA of Ratabari Bijoy Malakar met chief minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma with a prayer to declare August 13 as a state Holiday.
“With due respect would like to draw your kind attention that on 13th August, 1891 mother India’s true son and freedom fighter Bir Tikendrajit was publicly hanged at 4.30 pm at Polo ground in Imphal by the British Govt,” states the letter submitted by the five BJP MLAs from Barak Valley.
The letter adds, “Bir Tikendrajit was the Commander of Manipur Army and engineered a Palace revolution that led to the events known as the Anglo Manipuri war of 1891 or the “Manipur Expedition”. In his call of “save Mother India from Britishers” so many Indian brave hearts were influenced and they participated actively along with him in India’s freedoms struggle against the Britishers. On 13th August 1891 he along with Thangal General Sacrificed himself with a smile on lip for mother India while they were hanged publicly by the Britishers.”
The MLAs pointed out to the CM that in many parts of Assam the people have been commemorating Bir Tikendrajit death on 13th August since long. “Not only Manipuri community but also every community is observing the death anniversary of this Martyr Bir Tikendrajit’s in a befitting manner every year and it’s a long standing demand of the people to declare his death anniversary as State Holiday. Therefore, we pray that you would be kind enough to declare the 13th August as State holiday to commemorate the supreme sacrifice of Bir Tikendrajit,” the letter concludes.
