BJP worker murder in Karimganj: Committees submit memo, call for arrest of culprits

BJP workers of the Patharkandi and Lowairpua Block Mandal Committees, on Tuesday, submitted a memorandum to Patharkandi circle officer L. Kiangte demanding the arrest of all those involved in the murder of Bijon Deb (30), a BJP worker at Patharkandi in Karimganj district.

Bijon, son of late Binoy Kumar Deb, was stopped at Chandmari village around 9:30pm on Wednesday night by Kashi Keot (32) and some of his accomplices over an enmity of the past. Bijon, who was returning back to his home, was later allegedly hit on his head with an iron rod by Kashi and his accomplices, who fled away immediately after the incident.

Bijon, who was critically injured, was thereafter taken by local residents to a hospital at Patharkandi. However, he did not survive very long and succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. A probe was initiated into the incident and a man Pratap Chasha (45) was arrested on Thursday night in this connection by police. Pratap is a history-sheeter and there are multiple cases lodged against him as per police records.

On Tuesday morning, BJP workers of Patharkandi and Lowairpua went to the circle office and submitted a memorandum to Kiangte seeking the arrest of all the culprits involved in the incident. The workers further threatened to stage large-scale protests if the accused are not arrested soon. The memorandum was signed by BJP workers including Shantilal Sinha, Hrishikesh Nandi, Kishore Choudhury and Namita Goala among others.

Sources in police said the accused were at large and continuous operations were being conducted to nab them. Two persons identified as Bijoy Naidu (60) and Dinesh Das (52) have been picked up by the police from different locations on Sunday night on the suspicion that they might be involved.

They were produced before a court and were remanded in police custody. They were being thoroughly grilled, as per last available reports.
