Bodies Of Two Missing NIT Silchar Students Recovered On Sunday; Harangajao Tragedy Claims Three Lives

The tragic incident at Lower Boulsol near the Harangajao waterfall in Dima Hasao district deepened on Sunday (November 9) as the bodies of the remaining two missing NIT Silchar students — Sauhard Rai (20) from Uttar Pradesh and Radhika (19) from Bihar — were recovered by rescue teams. Their discovery comes a day after the body of Sarvakritika Singh, also a first-year student, was found on Saturday evening.

A joint rescue operation involving the SDRF, NDRF and Fire & Emergency Services resumed at daybreak on Sunday after the search was halted on Saturday night due to poor visibility. After several hours of intensive downstream search, the bodies of Sauhard Rai and Radhika were located.

Confirming the development to Barak Bulletin, Dima Hasao Superintendent of Police Ripunjoy Kakoti said the bodies will be sent to Haflong Civil Hospital for postmortem examination. He added that operational difficulties at night had delayed the rescue efforts.

Earlier in the day, Debolal Gorlosa, Chief Executive Member of the Dima Hasao Autonomous Council, had expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the three young students, calling it a tragedy “beyond comprehension”. Later on Sunday afternoon, Gorlosa visited the incident site at Lower Buolsol. In a Facebook post, he wrote, “Today, I visited Lower Buolsol, Harangajao, the site of the tragic incident where three students of NIT Silchar lost their lives. During the visit, I met with the local residents of Buolsol as well as officials from NIT Silchar to understand the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate event.

The local people expressed their grief and shared details of the situation, while the NIT officials discussed the steps being taken to support the affected families and ensure the safety of students in the future. It was a somber yet important visit to convey solidarity and to emphasize the need for preventive measures so that such incidents do not occur again.”

According to sources, a group of seven students from NIT Silchar had travelled to the popular Harangajao waterfall on a Saturday outing when one of them slipped and fell into the waterfall, while two students went to rescue her, leading to unfortunate end.

With Sunday’s recovery, all three missing students — Sarvakritika Singh, Sauhard Rai, and Radhika — have now been found, bringing a painful end to the two-day rescue operation. The incident has sent shockwaves across NIT Silchar students and fraternity.
