Bravery: Uttam Sharma, Shankar and Mantu Nath jump into the water in Karimganj to rescue youth

Ajitesh Roy, an executive at a Finance company was riding on his motorcycle on Saturday evening. He was at the Longai Road, near Shib Bari which was submerged by water flowing from the hilltop to the nearby deep gorge. These are common sites across the entire state of Assam which is witnessing horrible floods.

As he was riding on the road, the flow of the water disturbed his balance and he tumbled. The speeding flow then got hold of his weight and within the fraction of second, he was in deep water. His motorcycle was washed away too.

Shankar Nath, a resident of Longai Road Brahman Shasan Shiv Bari noticed that a man is struggling for his life. “I looked around and saw that there are people around us, all shocked by the fact that a young boy is getting drowned. It took me a minute or so to gather the courage, but then I jumped into the water and started swimming towards him,” informs Shankar Nath, while speaking with Barak Bulletin.

Uttam Sharma and Mantu Nath also followed. In fact, it was seen in a video that Uttam Sharma kept Ajitesh Roy afloat by holding him on his neck. Shankar Nath and Mantu Nath swam back to the shore to gather a rope. They took the fishing net and started swimming back towards the drowning Ajitesh. Eventually, a few others approached for help.

“I know how to swim and sheer conscience provoked me to jump into the water. I am just grateful that three of us and obviously, with the help of others who helped by pulling the rope, managed to save the life. We have even lifted his motorcycle from the gorge,” informed Shankar Nath.

Ajitesh is fine, unable to swim in depth, he drank a lot of water. But the locals helped in reviving his consciousness after he was rescued by Shankar Nath, Uttam Sharma and Mantu Nath.
