Brawl breaks in Cachar Congress event attended by MP Gaurav Gogoi and Youth Congress President Srinivas MV in Silchar
In yet another instance of internal turmoil within the Cachar Congress, a heated altercation unfolded today during an event attended by Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi and Indian Youth Congress President Srinivas MV. The incident occurred as they gathered to launch the ‘Youth Jodo Yatra’ in Silchar, bringing to the forefront the party’s ongoing internal divisions.
The event began with much anticipation as Gaurav Gogoi, Srinivas MV, along with Cachar District President Abhijit Paul and North Karimganj MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha, among other party members, embarked on a foot march from the Congress Bhawan in Silchar. The route took them through Gandhibaag, Central Road, Premtala, Shillongpatty, before concluding back at the Congress Bhawan.
However, the turmoil unfolded within the Congress Bhawan during a planned meeting, which saw a large gathering of Congress workers. While both Gaurav Gogoi and Srinivas MV addressed the attendees, the omission of North Karimganj MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha from the speaker list raised eyebrows and ignited tensions.
Supporters of Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha voiced their displeasure over his exclusion, sparking a confrontation with those aligned with Abhijit Paul. The situation escalated quickly, culminating in a brawl that unfolded in front of the senior party leaders, abruptly halting the meeting.
This incident is not an isolated occurrence, as previous instances of internal discord within the Cachar Congress have been exposed in the presence of national leaders or visiting delegations. Prominent leaders such as Jitendra Singh and Bhupen Bora have also witnessed similar episodes in the past.
A segment of Congress workers believes that Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha is attempting to exert undue influence over the affairs of Cachar Congress, a stance vehemently opposed by those who consider him an outsider. Regardless of the underlying dynamics, it is evident that the Congress party, which serves as the primary opposition in the state, once again struggled to execute its own event without disruption. This incident sheds light on the urgent need for the party to address its internal divisions and promote unity among its ranks.
