Breaking: 6AP Battalion personnel deployed at Assam-Mizoram border dies; “It was a road accident,” Police
In an unfortunate turn of affairs, a constable has lost his life. 6AP Battalion, Constable Karthik Nath who is a resident of Karbi Anglong was deployed at the Khulicherra camp to man the Assam side of the inter-state border shared with Mizoram.
He was rushed to the Dholai Primary Health Care Centre where the doctors declared him brought dead. According to the Commandant of the 6AP battalion, Nath along with his colleague were walking towards the camp in Khulicherra located in the jurisdiction of Dholai Police, when a speeding auto-rickshaw collided with him from behind.
The Commandant added that the matter has been reported to the Police Station and the Dholai Police has already launched an investigation. However, the Commandant made it clear that the death was due to an accident and there wasn’t any skirmish with the counterparts on the Mizoram side of the border.
While the cross-border conflict has been ruled out, there are chatters among the locals that a fight broke between the personnel in the camp, and as a result, of the same, the constable died while on duty. The officer in charge of Dholai Police Station rubbished the rumours.
He said, “It was a road accident. The auto-rickshaw managed to flee from the spot and so we haven’t arrested anyone yet. But the investigation is going on and we will identify those involved in the accident.”
The locals find it tough to believe that an auto-rickshaw went uphill towards the camp and managed to escape the heavy condoning of Police personnel, after killing one of them. Some of the locals who saw the dead body said that there was a cut mark on Nath’s cheeks and there were suspicious marks on his throat. “The matter needs detailed investigation as one of our men in uniform has died on duty,” said a local. Another one appealed for the intervention of the DGP of Assam Police, GP Singh.
It is indeed a mysterious death and what unfolds in the days ahead is something that remains to be seen.
