An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.4 on the Richter scale struck the tranquil region of Cachar in Assam, India today, leaving residents startled and concerned about potential aftershocks. The National Center for Seismology, under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India, swiftly responded to assess the situation, providing crucial information regarding the earthquake’s epicenter and impact.

The earthquake’s epicenter was located approximately 71 kilometers northeast of Dharmanagar in Tripura, India. The seismic activity occurred at 15:48:31 IST on September 9, 2023, and had a depth of 43 kilometers. The coordinates of the epicenter were recorded at 24.76° latitude and 92.74° longitude. Fortunately, there have been no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage to infrastructure.

The earthquake’s impact, however, was felt across the entire Cachar region. Residents reported feeling strong tremors, causing momentary panic and leading many to evacuate their homes and workplaces. As the shaking subsided, people gathered outdoors in open spaces, fearing potential aftershocks.
