Burmese Supari Mafia Hazi Nizam Uddin admitted to SMCH with bullet injuries; “He jumped off the jeep to escape,” Police sources
Yesterday, Superintendent of Police Cachar, Dr. Ramandeep Kaur announced formally that Cachar Police will go “all out” against the kingpins involved in the illegal smuggling of Burmese Betelnuts through Silchar. One of the masterminds in Cachar, Hazi Nizam Uddin’s residence was raided in Katigorah yesterday afternoon. The Police opened fire to stop Nizam from escaping. Eventually, he was caught unhurt.
While the Police was in the process of transferring him to the district headquarters in Silchar, according to the Police sources, he tried to jump off from the jeep near Salchapra area. That is when the Police again resorted to firing bullets. “A bullet has hit him in his left leg and with bullet injuries, he has been rushed to the hospital,” informed the Police.
How critical is the injury is something that is yet to be determined, but the Police sources confirmed that he is out of danger. How an alleged kingpin of a multicrore scam could attempt an escape from Police’s custody is another mystery. Was he not handcuffed and chained as per protocol, also remains unknown.
Video footages show that he was walked into a jeep by the Police officials with a jeep ahead and one in the rear end.
Apart from Hazi Nizam Uddin, Cachar Police also raided the residence of Zakir Talukdar in Chamragudam area. While Zakir was not there, the Police detained his wife and kids and as per sources, all of them were detained at Udarbond Police Station. The Police also detained one Rupak Paul from Zakir’s house who admitted that Zakir is involved in Supari Scam.
Cachar Trading Owner Altaf Hussain’s office and residence have been raided too. It is rumoured that all of them were operating the nexus in Cachar district. The Burmese Supari consignments are trasported to India from Myanmar through Champai border in Mizoram. Later, through Cachar’s Lailapur, the trucks loaded with illegally smuggled betel nuts from Burma enter Assam and eventually gets transported to other parts of the country. There nuts are used by Gutka factories and other business that order in bulk.
“Due to the illegal transportation of Burmese Supari and its trade in India, Government of Assam suffers huge loses in revenue. This black money is also used in fuelling other antisocial activities. We have information that the smugglers smuggle other banned substances through these trucks carrying Burmese betelnuts. So, as per the directve of chief minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, we are going all out against this nexus that is handling the operations in Silchar,” said Cachar SP Dr. Ramandeep Kaur during a press conference at her office.
