Burmese Supari nexus active again in Barak Valley; Two boggies filled with nuts worth 2 crores seized
A huge consignment of contraband Burmese Supari ( betelnuts ) was seized at Hailakandi’s Jamira railway station on the wee hours of Wednesday, police said.
The GRP (Government Railway Police) detained as many as two compartments of a Silchar bound passenger train at Jamira Railway Station on Wednesday, on suspicion of the compartments having loaded with Burmese supari (betel nut). The train was coming from Bhairabi in Mizoram to Silchar in Assam, a senior police official said.
Though the amount of seizure has not been ascertained by the police yet, however, local sources claimed the two boggies contain around 150 sacks of betel nut amounting 2 crores.
Hailakandi SP Gaurav Uphadhyay has confirmed the development to Barak Bulletin and said that a team of Silchar GRP has arrived at the location to investigate.
“The train was coming from Bairabi station. It entered around 5 am on the morning when we were tipped off that some suspicious consignment is being transported by this train, so we responded promptly and initiated the investigation” SP Gaurav Uphadhyay said.
Supari being smuggled elsewhere in the country from the Northeast is not new and the issue hits headlines from time to time. Burmese supari is also transported to Indian cities through the Northeast. The Assam Police has arrested many kingpin of this supari transport nexus but today’s seizure evidents that some more are in loose.
