Cachar Excise department raids illicit liquor hubs; destroys 2260 lt of fermented wash
Today morning Cachar Excise Department along with armed officers of Assam Police raided as many as nine hubs operating in and around Silchar. Based on a secret information, superintendent of Cachar Excise department, Sunil Sinha launched a raid in Maruacherra Barman Basti, Borbond Barman Basti, Srikona, Veterinary near NIT and several other places around Silchar township.
“During the operation we have recovered and destroyed 2260 litres of fermented wash after keeping samples. We have also seized 120 litres of illicitly distilled liquor, 12 sets of distilling apparatus, 3.6 litres of IMFL, 4.55 litres of beer,” Sinha informed our correspondent.
The Excise department arrested nine individuals in connection with producing and selling illicitly distilled liquor. “We are following the procedure to ensure they are sent to jail custody,” added Sinha.
The superintendent said that he was “astonished” by the fact that the crime of producing and selling illicit liquor is again on the rise. “After our regular raids and efforts the liquor crime had declined significantly in Cachar. We could not conduct raids during the election and now as it appears, they have started again. Today was a big success for the department, but we will continue with our efforts to reduce the liquor crime in the district,” Sinha added.
It is worth mentioning here that earlier this year, more than 150 individuals had died in the Golaghat hooch tragedy after consuming illicitly distilled liquor. The minister of Excise, government of Assam, Parimala Suklabadiya mentioned several times that the department will do its best to restrict the sale and supply of illicitly distilled liquor in Assam.
