Cachar & Jiribam SPs Hold Critical Meeting in Border: Collaborative Efforts to Ensure Peace

The Jiribam district in neighboring Manipur is currently facing severe unrest due to ongoing communal clashes. In response to the escalating situation, a critical meeting was held between the Superintendents of Police (SP) of Cachar, Assam, and Jiribam, Manipur, to address the recent developments and strategize on maintaining peace and order in the border regions. M Pradip Singha, the newly appointed SP of Jiribam described the situation as “tense but under control”.

The clashes in Jiribam have resulted in a highly volatile situation, prompting the imposition of a curfew to control the unrest. Over the past few days, several hundred residents from Jiribam have sought refuge in the neighboring district of Cachar in areas like Hmarkhawlein, Jirighat in Lakhipur areas. The heightened tensions have necessitated an increased presence and vigilance by the Cachar police force in the border areas.

To ensure that the disturbances in Jiribam do not spill over into Cachar, the SPs of both districts, M. Pradeep Singha of Jiribam and Numal Mahatta of Cachar, convened a special meeting at the Jirighat border. This meeting, held late at night, focused on collaborative measures to maintain peace and stability along the border. Assam Police DGP G.P. Singh also participated in the discussions via telephonic conversation, gaining firsthand insights into the situation in Jiribam.

Jiribam SP M. Pradeep Singha expressed gratitude towards the Assam Police and the Assam DGP for their support and cooperation during this crisis. He highlighted the importance of such collaboration in managing the tense situation and preventing the clashes from affecting the border regions. Speaking to our correspondent, Singha said, “This step by the Assam Police will motivate us further to ensure peace. We look forward to cooperation from the Assam Police in our future endeavors and maintaining peace on both sides of the border”.

Cachar SP Numal Mahatta assured that the police team in Cachar is on high alert and actively patrolling the border to ensure the clashes do not impact their side. He emphasized the commitment of Cachar Police to maintaining peace and preventing any spillover of violence from Jiribam into Cachar.

Cachar SP APS Numal Mahatta said, “I’m happy to meet the new SP of Jiribam. He is an old acquaintance. With cooperation we are intensifying joint patrolling of the border areas. There is skepticism that nuisance creating forces from Manipur might be entering Cachar through the riverine route of Jiri and Barak River, so we have intensified the river route patrolling as well. We are present round the clock to ensure safety of the people in the bordering areas not just in Assam but also in Manipur”.

The meeting concluded with a strong resolve to work together in safeguarding the border areas and ensuring the safety and security of the residents on both sides.
