Cachar Police Arrest Two With 195 Cartons Of Foreign Liquor In Silchar

Cachar Police on Friday (January 16) seized a large consignment of foreign liquor during a raid at Fatak Bazar in Silchar, dealing a major blow to an inter-state liquor smuggling racket. Acting on specific intelligence inputs, the police intercepted a truck and recovered 195 cartons of foreign liquor concealed under detergent sacks, meant to be smuggled to a dry state.

According to police sources, the liquor was allegedly being transported from Meghalaya and was intended to be smuggled to Mizoram via Cachar district. Mizoram is a dry state.

Two persons—truck driver Masum Ahmed Laskar (24) and helper Abdul Wahid Barbhuiya (17), both residents of Katigorah area—were arrested in connection with the case. The truck bearing registration number AS-26AC-0313 was also taken into custody.

The seized liquor includes multiple brands, and its illegal market value is estimated to be several lakhs of rupees. After completion of legal formalities, the accused were produced before the court and remanded to judicial custody.

Meanwhile, Cachar Police stated that further investigation is underway to ascertain whether more individuals are involved in the smuggling network.
