Cachar Police arrests 3 involved in the attack on external invigilator at JR HS School
The attackers of Dr Subhash Debnath, who had external invigilator duty at JR Higher Secondary School in Ganirgram have been arrested by Cachar Police. The assault took place on March 11 after Debnath strictly enforced anti-cheating measures during the Class 12 board exams at JR Higher Secondary School in Ganirgram.
The miscreants involved in the attack on the assistant professor of Chemistry of Gurucharan College include two students who had their board exam at that centre, along with a Junior Assistant of JR HS School.
According to police, Debnath was returning home when he was ambushed by two students on a motorbike with no number plate. They attempted to strike his head with a bamboo stick, but he managed to dodge the blow, which instead hit his hand, crushing his fingers. Locals helped him reach the police station, where he lodged a complaint.
The attack stemmed from Debnath’s role as an external invigilator at JR HS School, where he and another official prevented students from cheating. On the last day of the exams, they increased monitoring, ensuring no malpractice occurred, which enraged some students. Earlier, Debnath had expelled four students caught with over 50 cheating slips each.
Cachar Police confirmed the arrests of Imdad Ullah Barbhuya (19) from Buribail Pt-II, Borkhola, and Billal Ahmed Barbhuya (18) from Dudhpur Pt-I, Katigorah—both Class 12 students. Additionally, Hanif Alom Mazarbhuya (39), a Junior Assistant at JR HS School, was arrested for allegedly instigating the attack. The bike used in the assault has been seized.
Cachar SP Numal Mahatta stated, “The two students, who were previously expelled for cheating, admitted to attacking Dr Subhash Debnath in retaliation. We also arrested Hanif Alom Mazarbhuya, who encouraged them. All three will be produced before the court on March 14.”
This incident has once again brought to light the systematic cheating that goes on during the board exams. JR Higher Secondary School was also in the limelight back in 2023, where chits were supplied in gunny bags during the Class 10 boards exam of SEBA. The very first exam had to be cancelled due to the malpractice and use of unfair means.
