Cachar Police confiscates morphine-based drug worth Rs 1 crore, arrests Manipur resident

Last night in a raid conducted by Cachar Police, huge quantities of the morphine-based drug were found in the custody of a Manipur resident. The search operation was conducted based on a secret input by a team led by the OCs of Sonai and Kachudaram Police Station. The raid was conducted at a house in Motinagar Road of Boalihaor. The arrested individual has been identified as Laisharam Ramjoy Singh.

The recovered psychotropic substance, morphine, weighed 872 grams and the market value is estimated to be around one crore rupees. This huge quantity of drugs was found at a home in Boalihaor and the arrested individual, Laisharam Ramjoy Singh is a 51-year-old drug smuggler from Heingang village of Manipur East district. He has come to Cachar from Manipur’s Jiribam to sell the drug here. The seized drugs were found wrapped in two black polythene bags from the arrested smuggler’s possession.

The raid operation was led by Sonai OC Manab Handique and Kachudarama OC Bipul Biswas. The joint team of these two police stations was successful in nabbing this drug smuggler. Legal action against the arrested individual has been started. The individual has been arrested based on the NDPS Act, which stands for the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act of 1985. The NDPS Act views drug offenses very seriously and penalties are stiff. The quantum of sentence and fine varies with the offense.

In some cases, Morphine can even be smoked. Morphine has the potential to be highly addictive, as tolerance to it develops rapidly.
