Cachar Police Nab Two From Mizoram After Gunshot in Ashram Road; Extortion, Drug Links Found
Cachar Police arrested two youths from Mizoram on Saturday (September 6) in connection with a late-night gun attack on a local near Sunlight Hospital, Ashram Road, Silchar. The incident occurred around 11:30 PM on September 5, when the victim was stopped by two persons on a Hero X-Pulse bike. One of them allegedly shot him with a gun, causing serious injury to his right arm. The attackers fled when the victim raised an alarm.
The complainant, a Silchar localite, later reported the matter at the National Highway Outpost late that night. He was shifted to Silchar Medical College for treatment.
The accused have been identified as David Hmar (22), son of Lalfauwamah, and Christopher Vanlalpeka (22), son of Lilmahruala, both residents of Tuikual, Aizawl, Mizoram.
During interrogation and a subsequent search, police recovered an Austrian-made Glock Air Gun Black Colour pistol with magazine and bullets, one cell of Co2 gas, an Apple iPhone with charger, a black Alpinestar bag, Rs. 20,000 cash, and the Hero X-Pulse motorcycle (Reg. No. MZ-01-AC-0336) used in the crime.
Cachar Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Numal Mahatta on Sunday (September 7) confirmed a late-night gunshot incident at Ashram Road in Silchar.
“Late last night at Ashram Road, we received information about a firing incident. The victim alleged that unknown persons had stopped him and fired at him. Immediately, we alerted police teams across the district. At the zero point of the National Highway Road, two persons were intercepted and interrogated. The duo admitted to firing an airgun at Ashram Road,” SSP Mahatta said.
“They fell into a ditch while they were trying to run away after the gun. Their muddy appearance raised suspicion, which helped us identify them,” Mahatta added.
According to the SSP, preliminary investigation suggests that the accused David and Christopher are involved in extortion, drug peddling, and loan sharking. Both were produced in court and are now in police custody.
“We also suspect links with anti-social organisations and are probing that angle. We have sought information about them from neighbouring states as well,” SSP Mahatta said.
The victim’s identity has not been disclosed. On his background, the SSP noted, “Preliminary findings suggest there may have been a financial transaction between him and the accused. We are investigating the nature of their relationship.”
A case has been registered under the Arms Act, and an investigation is ongoing.
