A Bolero pick-up van containing loads of Burmese betel nuts was intercepted by the Arunachal Police today. The pickup van tried to outsmart and escape the police check post in Arunachal. After a chase with the speeding pickup truck, the police had to fire shots to intercept the vehicle and apprehend the smugglers. 37 sacks of Burmese areca were  found in the truck which was headed from Mizoram. 2 men were immediately arrested along with the seized vehicle.

This incident happened today afternoon in front of the Arunachal Police Station. A Bolero pickup van with registration number AS 28C 9250 stacked with illegal Burmese supari was coming in from Mizoram. During naka checking by the police, the truck tried to flee the check post in the Masimpur area of Cachar. As soon as the news of the police checking got into their ears, the culprits immediately tried to escape the situation. The police, though chased the vehicle, were unfortunately unable to get hold of it. The Arunachal police were thus compelled to shoot rounds of firing towards the van to bring it to a halt. This attempt helped them to stop the vehicle and get hold of the smuggling van.

The seized vehicle was carrying 37 sacks of betel nuts and 2 men, namely Dildar Ali and Rafiqul Islam, both residents of the Barpeta district, were taken into custody immediately by the police.

The illicit trade of smuggling Burmese betel nuts is on the rise lately. Frequent cases of such illegal trade are trending on the news. The states which share the border with Myanmar are one of the prime sources of bringing the illegal betel nuts into the country.
