Cachar Police Seize 1,000 Packs of Illegal Burmese Cigarettes, Two Arrested
In a major crackdown on alleged illegal smuggling activities, Cachar Police successfully intercepted a truck carrying a large quantity of illegal foreign cigarettes on National Highway 06 near the Gamon Bridge. The vehicle, identified as a Punjab Body Truck (No. AS 01LC 6671), was traveling from Mizoram towards Meghalaya when it was stopped by authorities after a tip-off about the transportation of illicit goods.
According to an official press statement issued by Cachar Superintendent of Police, Numal Mahatta, the truck was thoroughly searched at Katigorah Police Station, where officers discovered 1,000 packets of illegal Esse Light Burmese cigarettes hidden inside the cabin of the vehicle.
Two individuals, Khatrajoy Reang, a resident of Kulai RF Ambassa in Dhalai, Tripura, and Bormatien Halam, from Zanthum village in Tripura, were apprehended at the scene. The accused have been taken into custody, and legal proceedings are being initiated against them.
Authorities are expected to further investigate the source and distribution network of the seized contraband.
