Cachar Police Seize Heroin Worth Over Rs. 6.5 Crore, Three Arrested in Silchar Bypass Operation

In a major crackdown on narcotics trafficking, Cachar Police, along with the Special Task Force (STF), on Saturday, May 24, intercepted a vehicle at Sonabarighat on the Silchar Bypass and seized suspected heroin weighing 1.239 kilograms. The estimated value of the seized contraband in the black market is over Rs. 6.5 crore. Three individuals, including two women, were also apprehended.

Acting on credible intelligence, a special operation was launched, and a Ford Ecosport Titanium (Registration No. AS-26A-2522), travelling from Churachandpur in Manipur, was intercepted. Three individuals were apprehended from the vehicle, namely:
1. Chinlam (37), wife of Sesan, resident of Tuibong, Churachandpur, Manipur
2. Mohamda Abem (32), wife of Sahrub Ali, resident of Bhella, Barpeta
3. Shahrukh Ali (25), son of Sadek Ali, resident of Bhella, Barpeta

Upon a thorough search, the police recovered 105 soap cases filled with suspected heroin hidden inside specially modified secret chambers of the vehicle. The drug detection kit confirmed the presence of heroin in the seized material.

“Three days ago, the vehicle had left from Churachandpur (Manipur). We intercepted it yesterday and apprehended the three individuals travelling in it. During the search, we recovered the heroin concealed inside the vehicle. Following proper legal procedures, we seized the drugs in the presence of independent witnesses,” said Cachar SP Numal Mahatta.

He added, “Our preliminary investigation suggests that the consignment was being transported from one neighbouring state to another, and Cachar was being used as a transit route. We have launched a detailed investigation into the network.”

The accused have been booked under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The seized vehicle has also been taken into custody.
