Cachar Police Seize Rs 3 Crore Worth Ganja in Special Operation

In a special operation, Cachar Police recovered suspected ganja (cannabis) worth Rs. 3 crore from two vehicles near Silchar Bypass on June 24, 2025 (Tuesday). The successful anti-narcotics drive was part of Assam Police’s ongoing war on drugs.

According to police reports, the raid was carried out around 2 AM near ISBT, Silchar, under the jurisdiction of Silchar Police Station. Acting on credible intelligence, officers intercepted two vehicles—a Bolero (AS 01 EF 2494) and a Verna (TR 01 BQ 0462)—both coming from Tripura. A thorough search led to the discovery of 86 packets of suspected ganja, weighing around 576.58 kilograms.

Three individuals from West Tripura were apprehended during the operation. They are Jyotish Debbarma (38), son of Robicharan Debbarma from Ramsankar Para; Prasan Debbarma (32), son of late Sujit Debbarma from Rahi Sadar Para; and Chiranjit Debbarma (31), son of Samir Debbarma from Ramdas Thakur Para.

Police confirmed that the contraband was concealed inside specially built secret compartments within the vehicles. Independent witnesses were present at the scene as the psychotropic substance was seized. The drug detection kit used on-site tested positive for ganja.

Superintendent of Police, Numal Mahatta, addressing the media, said, “It was a special operation that took place at 2 a.m. on 24 June, and we were able to intercept two vehicles being used to transport illegal narcotics. We also arrested three individuals involved in the act. The vehicles had special chambers that were used to hide the narcotics.”

The seized ganja, if sold in the black market, would fetch approximately Rs. 3 crore. Preliminary investigation suggests that the narcotic consignment was being transported illegally from Dharmanagar in Tripura. Further investigation is currently underway to uncover the full extent of the drug network.
