Cachar Police Team Disguises in Burqa and Lungi to Nab Wanted Dacoit
In a dramatic undercover operation, Cachar Police arrested one of the district’s most-wanted dacoits, Muhibul Haque alias Khontai, in a daring undercover operation in Bihara, Katigorah on Thursday (June 12) night. To avoid tipping off the absconding criminal, the police ditched their uniforms and disguised themselves in lungis and burqas. He was produced before the court on Friday (June 13).
The Kalain Police team, acting on a tip-off that Khontai had returned to his home after a long time in hiding, devised an innovative plan to arrest him without raising alarm. A special eight-member team was formed — some officers dressed in lungis while others wore burqas and posed as women.
According to sources, the disguised officers approached the suspect’s residence. Believing them to be visiting relatives, Khontai let them inside. The moment the officers pulled out their firearms from beneath the clothing, the dacoit panicked and tried to escape by jumping into a nearby pond. However, police managed to nab him from the water and take him into custody.
Khontai, who had been creating terror in Cachar and other parts of the Barak Valley through a series of dacoities, had multiple cases registered against him across various police stations. Following his arrest, he has been remanded to judicial custody on Friday.
Police have termed the arrest a major breakthrough in their ongoing efforts to clamp down on organised crime in the region.
