Can’t Jeopardise My Career for Aminul: Ayesha Sultana Team Quit Congress Within A Week
Within a week of joining the Indian National Congress after quitting Asom Gana Parishad to support Aminul Haque Laskar, Ayesha Sultana Choudhury and team have now withdrawn their support. In a significant political development ahead of the elections, a major split has emerged within the Congress in Sonai, with Ayesha Sultana Choudhury and her entire team stepping away from the party just days after extending support.
Ayesha, who had joined hands with Congress candidate Aminul Haque Laskar on March 29 along with nearly 325 supporters, alleged serious discrepancies and levelled explosive charges against him. Addressing a press conference on Saturday evening (April 4), she accused Aminul of misleading the public with “false promises” during campaign rallies.
She further alleged that misinformation was being spread on sensitive issues like the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and the Waqf Board, claiming that people’s emotions were being “exploited for votes”. Ayesha also questioned internal party functioning, stating that despite their presence, no formal membership was granted to her or her supporters.
Clarifying her stand, Ayesha said, “We went to the Congress office on March 29 with our full team to support Aminul Haque Laskar. I was an aspiring AGP candidate, but after being denied a ticket, I was requested by Aminul to support him. However, during campaigning, we witnessed fake assurances and misleading statements being made to the people.”
She added, “Supporting him would mean fooling the people of Sonai, which I cannot do. I have no relation with Congress now, and all of us have stepped away.”
Making further allegations, Ayesha claimed that Aminul had made statements suggesting extreme consequences if UCC is implemented, which she termed as “completely false”. “I cannot jeopardise my career by supporting such narratives,” she said.
With this sudden exit, the political equations in the Sonai Legislative Assembly constituency have taken a sharp turn. The development raises key questions about internal rifts within Congress and the potential impact on Aminul Haque Laskar’s campaign ahead of the elections.
For now, Sonai remains abuzz with speculation — whether this is merely a political setback or a deeper internal conflict that could influence the electoral outcome.
