Case registered against Silchar’s Pranabananda Das, author of book on Manipur ethnic violence
In a recent development, a case has been registered against Silchar-based writer Pranabananda Das for allegedly “promoting enmity between groups” through his book ‘Manipur Files,’ which delves into the ethnic violence in the northeastern state of Manipur.
The First Information Report (FIR) was filed at Porompat police station in Imphal East district on November 25 by Luwangcha U. Ngamkheingakpa, a youth leader from Kangleipak Kanba Lup (KKL). The complainant accuses Das of presenting a biased narrative that focuses solely on one side of the conflict.
Pranabananda Das, a resident of Assam’s Silchar, now faces charges under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The charges include Section 153 A (promoting enmity between groups on grounds of religion, race, or place of birth), Section 200 (using as true such declaration knowing it to be false), and Section 295 (injuring or defiling a place of worship with intent to insult the religion of any class). Additionally, Das has been booked under Section 505 (statements conducing to public mischief), Section 499 (defamation), and Section 120B (criminal conspiracy with common intention) of the IPC.
The complaint alleges that the author has selectively chronicled the violence in Manipur, providing a skewed perspective that may exacerbate tensions between the Imphal Valley-based Meiteis and the hills-based Kuki Zo community. The FIR contends that Das’ narrative lacks balance, potentially contributing to further discord among these groups.
The book, ‘Manipur Files,’ explores the ongoing conflict that has plagued Manipur since May, resulting in more than 180 casualties and leaving thousands homeless. The violence primarily involves clashes between the Imphal Valley-based Meiteis and the hills-based Kuki Zo community. The author, Pranabananda Das, is known for his previous works that often touch upon socio-political issues in the northeastern region.
Pranabananda Das, who is yet to officially respond to the allegations, has gained recognition for shedding light on the complexities of the region through his writings.
As the case unfolds, it raises important questions about freedom of expression, responsible journalism, and the delicate balance required when addressing sensitive issues, especially those entrenched in historical and ethnic complexities.
