Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma To Inaugurate Mini Secretariat In Silchar
The long-awaited Mini Secretariat for Barak Valley in Silchar is set to be inaugurated today (March 14, 2026) by Himanta Biswa Sarma at 12 noon, shortly after the public programme of Narendra Modi in the town. The administrative complex, located at Srikona on the outskirts of Silchar, is expected to house several key government departments serving the Barak Valley region.
The idea of establishing a Mini Secretariat in Silchar was proposed by the Government of Assam during the tenure of former Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. The project was conceived to decentralise administrative functions and bring multiple state government offices for Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi districts under one complex, thereby reducing the dependence of Barak Valley residents on Guwahati for official work.
The project had an estimated cost of Rs. 135 crore, out of which Rs. 116 crore was sanctioned for the construction of the complex.
The foundation stone for the Mini Secretariat project was unveiled on March 3, 2019 by then Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal during a programme in Silchar.
Later that year, the Bhoomi Pujan for the construction was held on August 20, 2019 (Tuesday) at the project site in Srikona. The ceremony was performed by Parimal Suklabaidya and Rajdeep Roy, in the presence of several leaders including former minister Gautam Roy.
After several years of construction, the Mini Secretariat will finally be inaugurated today, March 14, 2026, by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma at 12 noon. The facility is expected to significantly strengthen administrative coordination in Barak Valley by accommodating various government departments within a single complex.
The inauguration comes on the same day as the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Silchar.
