“Citizenship amendment bill will be placed and passed in the winter session of Parliament,” Rajdeep Roy
Assam BJP spokesperson Rajdeep Roy, on Monday, said the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, would be placed and passed in the winter session of Parliament.
Addressing media persons on Monday afternoon, Roy said a state BJP delegation comprising chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal and health and education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma among others recently met central BJP leaders including BJP national president Amit Shah and BJP national general secretary Ram Madhav and apprised about issues related to the bill. The state BJP leaders have received an affirmative response in this regard, he said.
He reiterated that the BJP is committed to provide security and shelter to the persecuted migrants and said the bill, which is being reviewed by a joint parliamentary committee, would be implemented in the winter session of the Parliament.
He also slammed the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) for opposing the bill and seeking support from Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar against the bill.
An eight-member team of the AGP recently met Nitish Kumar and sought the JD (U)’s support against the passage of the bill in the Parliament. The delegation was led by AGP president and Assam agriculture minister Atul Bora and former Assam chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta.
“If the AGP wants to break the alliance, they are most welcome,” he said, adding that the BJP government’s stand on the bill is very much firm and this would be clear soon.
