CM lauds Karimganj Police’s effort as they nab 3,243 kg Ganja; “Market value 17 crore,” SP Padmanabh Baruah
A whopping three tonnes of cannabis was recovered by Karimganj Police this afternoon by Karimganj Police from a container truck. This truck was apprehended by police at Churaibari Watch Post neighbouring the Tripura border. One person was also arrested in this connection, along with the truck which was seized by the police. More arrests are expected to be made by the police soon in this circuit.
A container truck heading from Tripura was stopped at the Churaibari Watch Post for naka checking by the police. Upon opening the container, the police saw it loaded with jute sacks in a very huge quantity. These huge rolls of sacks made the police suspicious and decided to follow a thorough check.
Karimganj SP IPS Padmanabh Baruah speaking with Barak Bulletin correspondent said, “When the police present there cut open a few rolls, nothing was found inside them but gradually they got hold of packets of ganja concealed inside all the rolls. To our surprise, the whole consignment was checked, it weighed to be 3,243 kilograms and the market value is estimated to be somewhere around 15 to 16 crores”.Cannabis is not legal in India and is banned under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act of 1985.
The IPS officer further said, “The truck was headed from Tripura and according to the papers, it was headed for Guwahati but we are investigating the matter still. The truck driver was arrested for transporting the drugs and is a resident of Tripura”. The officer has also hinted that soon there can be further arrests of the others involved in this circuit.
The Chief Minister of Assam also took to social media to praise the Karimganj Police. CM Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote on Facebook, “Another major feat by Assam Police in its drive against drugs. Churaibari Watch Post staff of Karimganj Police seized 3,243 kg ganja concealed within empty sacks of a truck coming from a neighbouring state. One accused has been apprehended”.
