
CM Sarma Visits Flood-Hit Silchar, Assures Quick Relief and Support
After days of heavy rain, large parts of Assam, especially the Barak Valley, leading to a flood situation, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma visited Silchar today. Areas in the Cachar, Sribhumi, and Hailakandi districts are under water as the Barak River rose above the danger level. Both villages and towns have been badly affected.
On Tuesday, Chief Minister CM Himanta Biswa Sarma visited Silchar to see the flood situation for himself. He met people staying in relief camps and checked how the rescue and relief work was going.
CM Sarma said the flood situation in Barak Valley is now under control. He confirmed that there were no breaches in the embankments of the Cachar district, which are key to stopping more flooding. However, 15 weak embankments are being closely monitored. He assured that every family affected by the flood will receive help from the government. Already, ten pumps have been used to remove water, and more will be brought in if needed.
He also announced that financial help has been approved for flood victims and will soon be given through the District Commissioner’s office. The Chief Minister asked all officers to make sure food, clean water, medicines, and toilets are available in all relief camps.
CM Sarma shared that Prime Minister Narendra Modi called him on Tuesday morning, showing his concern for Assam. The Prime Minister promised full support and all kinds of help from the Centre. The Chief Minister said he would visit Sribhumi later this week, especially flood-hit areas.
While addressing media CM mentioned that Minister Pijush Hazarika will go to Berenga on 10 June to inspect a weak embankment. Although a project was already approved there, the work has not yet started. CM Sarma promised that the repair work in Berenga and Bethukandi would be completed within this year.
On the issue of the Gamon Bridge, he admitted that the construction had been delayed. Now, NHIDCL has been directed to finish it in the next 60 days, with a target date of 28 July. CM Sarma also visited Tarapur’s Shibbari road, also termed as Sinking zone and he reviewed the safety work going on there.
As per official reports, five revenue circles in Cachar are flooded, with 146 villages under water. Sadly, one child has died due to the disaster. The government has opened 90 relief camps, where over 19,200 people are now staying.
During his visit, the Chief Minister went to six major relief camps in Silchar, he listened to the concerns of the people and promised strong support from the government.
