Congress delegation stopped by Police, “Undemocratic,” Sushmita Dev; “Even CM didn’t go,” SP
Cachar SP Ramandeep Kaur and team has stopped the Congress delegation at Dholai while they were on their way to inspect the situation in Lailapur at Assam – Mizoram border. All India Mahila Congress President Sushmita Dev assured the Police that they will return from the Lailapur market and won’t visit the zone of conflict which is ahead of the Lailapur BEAT office. Kaur stood firm on her ground and did not allow the high profile delegation to drive through.
As per Sonia Gandhi’s instructions a special committee was formed. APCC president Bhupen Bora, CLP leader in Assam Assembly Debabrata Saikia, MP Pradyut Bordoloi, Deputy CLP leader in Assam Assembly Rakibul Hussain, MP Gaurav Gogoi, president of All India Mahila Congress Committee Sushmita Dev, and MLA and APCC working president Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha are in the committee and were instructed to visit the border today.
Following the instructions, the team was on its way to the border. “The way we have been restricted by Assam Police is undemocratic, to say the least. We have seen, Parimal Suklabaidya, Pijush Hazarika of the ruling party were allowed to visit the border but we were stopped. What sort of governance is this. Is the law of the land different for the opposition,” questioned Sushmita Dev.
Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha took a jibe at Himanta Biswa Sarma and said, “It is because of his failure as the chief minister of Assam, the situation is so bad. Assam Police personnel are losing lives.” The North Karimganj MLA criticised Sarma’s statement. “Yesterday, we heard Himanta Biswa Sarma said that if the centre instructs, Assam will hand over entire Barak Valley to Mizoram. Who is he to hand over the entire Barak Valley or Nalbari to anyone,” said Purkayastha.
Sushmita Dev too reiterated, “We thought Himanta Biswa Sarma is a strong personality but he turned out to be a weak man crawling before the Centre. Did not expect him to say that he will hand over Barak Valley or Nalbari to anyone just because of the Centre’s instructions.”
Newly transferred from Hailakandi, SP Cachar Ramandeep Kaur rubbished allegations that the Police is dealing with opposition differently. “Even the CM did not go,” she said. Adding, “It is a conflict zone so the entry has been restricted to only those who live in that area. We aren’t allowing anyone else to enter and the decisions have been taking to address the security concerns,” said Kaur.
Congress refused to buy SP’s logic and alleged that the government is intentionally curtailing the rights of opposition. “I appeal to the government of Mizoram and to the people of Barak Valley to maintain peace and find solutions,” Dev concluded.
